The beehive was COMPLETELY dark, that, when I opened my eyes in the middle of the night; I thought I was going blind. After a few hours of on-and-off sleep, a huge spider felt at home in the candle light we'd put on. Since it was fairly big and frightening, I had to face my fears and take the spider outside myself, while my dad was sleeping like a baby. Damn. What an adventure it was. In essence, I thought it was shocking to realize how spoilt we actually all are with having "easy" access to water, electricity, paved ways, bicycles, public transports and/or cars. It's so hard to put this into words or images, since that's alw...

King Mswati III, and absolute monarch, was born in 1968 and he has 14 wives and many children. The king danced with his men in front of the 80.000 girls. Many of the girls hope to get noticed by the king and to be chosen as a future wife, a ticket from poverty and into a life of privilege and luxury. It is mostly known for its natural parks, where the amazing African flora and faunas are protected and visited by a large number of tourists each year. Swaziland is a very poor country, and it has the highest HIV/AIDS infection ratios on the planet (around 40% of the population is infected, according to data from the US government). It is also the last absolute monarchy in Southern Africa, and King Mswati III rules the country according to traditional tribal values, with a very dictatorial style. He has 14 wives, and every year chooses a new wife between thousands of "competing" virgins. This ceremony is internationally known as the Reed Dance and represents a major tourist attraction, albeit mounting criticism from the international community. Swaziland has a constitution but political parties are illegal, and the currency is directly linked to the South African Rand. Despite these not- so-democratic facts, the people of Swaziland are very friendly and extremely welcoming to foreigners, and the country enjoys a relatively crime-free status, with very little violence. Compared to neighboring South Africa and Mozambique it is a relatively safe country to travel to. Nevertheless a certain degree of organization and flexibility is mandatory, because the lack of infrastructure can be a real challenge. Swaziland produces very large amounts of cannabis considering the limited geographical extension it occupies. According to the United Nations Drug Report of 2008, Swaziland is in the top-5 cannabis producing countries on the African continent. Virtually all of the cannabis production is exported across the porous border to South Africa or Mozambique, with a very small part left to satisfy the local demand. The people of Swaziland have the same type of relationship with cannabis that it is found in most of the poorest areas of the planet: it is the only crop able to create some income and to support local economical growth at tribal-family level. Most of the male population of the rural areas uses cannabis on a daily basis, for both recreational and medicinal purposes. The antiseptic properties of cannabis are extremely helpful to fight infections in rural areas.... read more on the website

More information about the video content bellow: 1. Swaziland's King Mswati II (1840-1868) was considered the greatest fighting king, having fought competing Zulu tribes and some of his own brothers for the throne. "Swazi" is the anglicized version of his name. 2. The mountains in Swaziland's Malolotja Nature Reserve are among the oldest in the world at 3.6 billion years. The park includes Ngwenya Mountain. The Ngwenya Mine is the oldest known mine, at an age of 43000 years. 3. Once a year, Swaziland holds a fertility festival and reed dance called umhlanga. During the week-long festival, over 25,000 unmarried girls of the kingdom dress in elaborate costume and sing and dance before the Queen Mother, giving the King an opportunity to choose a new wife. King Mswati III of Swaziland has 15 wives and 23 children. 4. Swaziland is almost completely surrounded by the larger country of South Africa, only sharing its eastern border with Mozambique. 5. Swaziland has two capital cities. Mbabane is the administrative, officially recognized capital, while Lobamba is the royal and legislative capital. 6. Swaziland surpassed Botswana as having the highest HIV prevalence rate in the world, with an estimated 210,000 people out of its 1.2 million population, or 27.73% living with HIV or AIDS. 7. Contact with the British came early in Mswati’s reign, when he asked British authorities in South Africa for assistance against Zulu raids into Swaziland. It also was during Mswati’s reign that the first whites settled in the country. Following Mswati’s death, the Swazis reached agreements with British and South African authorities over a range of issues, including independence, claims on resources by Europeans, administrative authority, and security. South Africans administered the Swazi interests from 1894 to 1902. In 1902 the British assumed control. We travel from South Africa to Swaziland for month eight of the World Race. About Me // I am 25, from Marietta, Georgia and I started this channel in 2013 in my final semester of my college. After graduating from Auburn University in Alabama I spent four months in Europe and tried my hand at vloging. You can watch the whole series here and forgive me for filming it on my iPhone. Right after traveling I moved to DC where I lived for two years. Last summer I backpacked through Central America and produced a 10 part vlog series about that as well. I currently am traveling on World Race. The World Race is an 11 month mission trip to 11 countries. I post videos almost every day, so subscribe and stay a while if you want to see more. - All filmed on a Canon G7x and Canon T3i. Thanks for watching, Julia

Men oh men, WHAT a crazy night! I slept in a traditional, primitive beehive in the rural area of Swaziland... No water, no shower, no "normal" toilet, no electricity. It's so hard to put this into words or images, since that's always the case, and you will always think: "oh yes, that's so true and so sad..." But EXPERIENCING it in this way, brought a whole new perspective. I saw the true local life and, although they actually sounded content with their way of life, it's a vast reminder to be truly grateful with what I have. Or, that I'm a spoilt little brat who can't find relaxation in TRUE back to basics. FYI: circular living is a way of life here, not a hipster thing. In places like these, there's simply no other way. It's life.
